Right: All Saints Church, Branston, Lincs

Picture
Many of my Kirton ancestors are buried
in the All Saints graveyard, having farmed the area from 1730 to the 1850s. At that time William Kirton transitioned from being part of the landed gentry to breweries, building & coal. Though increasingly inventive, the Kirton menfolk
lacked business acumen and the family fortunes deteriorated from that point.

I visited in 2009, walking from nearby Aberfeldy. The castle is built on a flat field, adjacent to the River Tay. It has been renovated and no longer resembles the 'dilapidated dunny' described by my father in the 1960s.

While I was there, a fully-kilted Scottish wedding was about to take place. That stood in contrast to the Belgian bikers who took my picture.
